The Duke of Augustenborg and the Danish Royal Family were in dispute for years over the right to the Danish crown. The *royal succession* disputes are a complex story, basically about infertility, lack of heirs, and the struggle for the duchies. It was a political hornet's nest. Christian VIII tried to keep the monarchy united by pursuing a cautious whole-state policy. In 1846 he declared that the entire kingdom should be kept undivided, and that Schleswig should have the same succession as Denmark. The conflict lurked beneath the surface, and the German states raged that the Augustinians' inheritance claims were being passed over. Both Sønderborg Castle and Augustenborg Castle have exhibitions that tell more about the dukes, the royal family and the succession dispute.
