Sitting in the border-inn Alter Deutscher Grenzkrug in the town Aventoft, North Frisia, you are seated in Germany, but by crossing the street, you will find yourself in Denmark. Since the referendum of 1920, the border has run in the middle of the road. Even the family dog of the innkeepers had to learn new tricks: curiously sniffing around, it crossed the street/the border. Promptly, the animal was "arrested" by Danish police and had to be picked up and was released at the police station in Tønder (DK). But that incident was not typical. Most of the time, the cooperation was quite uncomplicated. The inn was, and still is, a popular meeting place for hungry guests from both countries. It is said that in the past, Danish customs officers would enter the tavern by the back entrance and their German colleagues through the front door, in order to meet in the taproom for the common regulars' table.
