A Castle with Puppets and Music
For many years, the castle outside Husum was secondary residence for the dukes from the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. It was also the home of Duchess Augusta, the daughter of the Danish king. Today, no one dwells here anymore - except for lots of puppets. Carved wooden puppets, some with fur, some large, some small. That is because this castle houses - among other things - the Pole Poppenspäler Museum. Pole Poppenspäler is a puppeteer in a story made up by Theodor Storm. And he was born in Husum. In another part of the building, you can learn about the history of the castle. A music school also uses a few rooms here. So, there is a lot going on in the castle! And why is it called "Castle OUTSIDE Husum", you wonder? Quite simply, when it was built over 400 years ago, it was situated outside the city walls.
