A Rose as Symbol for Peace
In 2020, for the commemoration of the 1920 referendum regarding the border drawing between Denmark and Germany, rose breeder Rosa Eskelund bred a special rose on behalf of the Grænseforening (Border Association), which she named "Genforeningsrose" (Danish for „Reunification Rose“). In her words, "The almost white colour symbolises the peace that became a reality in 1920, when North Schleswig was reunited with Denmark". At the request of the Danish Queen Margrethe II, a bed with the Genforeningsrose was planted in the castle garden of Gråsten, where the public can visit and commemorate the significant event.
