The Border Route Trail is a themed bike road featuring the cultural history of the German-Danish border.
As a result of the 1920 referendum, this new border shaped the face of the entire region for over 80 years - until the Schengen Agreement came into force. After March 2001, the border slowly faded into insignificance.

At 13 points, this 130 km long, themed bicycle route crosses the historic border lay-out between the North Sea dykes and the Flensburg Fjord. Along the Border Route Trail, a great number of sights await the traveller – such as idyllic paths, the expanse of the marsh, inland dunes, and the heath of the Geest, as well as the ice-age tunnel-valley of the Krusau meadow.
The trail offers resting places and weather shelters, and provides 40 information points with overview maps and border history and lore – focusing on important local events, told in an entertaining way. In connection with the North Baltic Sea Bike Route and the Danish National Route 8, you will find numerous possibilities for shortcuts and round trips, thus shaping your border experience according to your own preferences.
