Frisian Daily Life in Schleswig-Holstein
Although there has never been an autarkic North Frisian state, North Frisians do have a flag, and they are one of the recognised minorities in Schleswig-Holstein. They have their own language, a rich culture, and a strong sense of independence. The latter was expressed in the 19th century with "Lewer duad üs slav!" (Better dead than a slave), a phrase that became proverbial. Around 8 to 10,000 people still speak Frisian today - in different dialects. Frisian is taught at some schools in Schleswig-Holstein, and you can study Frisian language in Kiel and Flensburg. Klootschieten (ball shooting) and Biike bonfires are probably the best-known Frisian traditions you can come across when visiting the region.
