An estimated 15,000 people belong to the German minority in Denmark. Their main organisation is the Bund Deutscher Nordschleswiger (Association of German North Schleswigers). Living in Denmark, the members of this minority contribute to the cultural, political, and social diversity of the region. The members do this particularly well, both audibly and visibly, with theatre performances, art exhibitions, concerts and at the North Schleswig Music Association’s Youth Music Festival. There are German kindergartens and schools, a German newspaper, numerous sports and other cultural activities. The largest festival of the German minority is the Knivsbergfest. The German minority in Denmark and the Danish minority in Germany came into being after the referendum in 1920, when the course of the German-Danish border - which is still valid today - was decided upon.
