Graves as witnesses to history

Holnis is a peninsula in the Baltic Sea. Here, two tombs are intricately linked to the history of the region. One commemorates the German-Danish wars in the 19th century. It bears the inscription "This stone was set by the Danish people for quartermaster Niels T. Bøgesen, who fell for the fatherland on 7 April 1848". The second tomb is a sailor's grave dating back to the time of the rum and sugar trade. Ships that returned to Flensburg from the former Danish West Indies colonies often had to call at the quarantine station at Holnis before the crew was allowed to disembark. One of the ships in 1850 carried Peter Thomsen, who was ill with cholera and died during the quarantine period. He was buried on the beach of Holnis.
