Haithabu
An international Hot Spot in the Middle Ages
On a journey back in time to the early Middle Ages, Haithabu would certainly be one of the most exciting destinations. There was a lot of bustle in the vivid Viking settlement. Here, the most important trade routes crossed, and here, people from all over the world would meet and exchange their goods. Haithabu is one of the oldest cities in Northern Europe, and one of the most important maritime trading centres from the 9th to the 11th century. The settlement was founded in the 8th century by Frisian traders. Today, the Viking Museum Haithabu at the Schlei Inlet is considered one of the most important archaeological museums in Germany. As time travel is still under construction, we are happy to report, that the reconstructed Viking houses on the site will give you an exciting idea of what life was like in this international hot spot of the Middle Ages.
