Landscapers on hooves
Some have fluffy ears and weigh around 500 kilos. Others like to run wild across the pasture. At Geltinger Birk, we have som very special landscape managers at work: Galloway cattle and wild horses. They live here all year round, eat grasses and herbs, and scrape the ground with their hooves.
In this way, among other things, they make room for small, delicate and often rare plants. You might also see the wild horses rolling in the sand with pleasure. The Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein. More than 200 bird species make this their home - including the white-tailed eagle. This large bird of prey prefers to eat fish. And that is quite convenient, because the Geltinger Birk is connected to the Baltic Sea. On your tour, you will see a lighthouse and discover an old windmill.
