To the east of here lies the 280 ha nature-experience area Stiftungsland Schäferhaus.
Two historical paths run through the middle of this former military training area.
The much older one is the original route of the Ochsenweg (Ox Road), which was used in earlier centuries to lead cattle from Denmark to the Elbe River in Germany. In military times, the historic route of the Ox Road was not accessible to civilians.
The younger road is the old church path from Harrislee to Handewitt. Before their own church was built in 1928, the people of Harrislee had a good 6 km walkway to church. Until 1955, Harrislee belonged to the parish of Handewitt. However, the distance was even further for the citizens of Frøslev, who also belonged to the parish of Handewitt until the border was drawn in 1920. Now, Frøslev became part of Bov, but the inhabitants were still allowed to use their old church road and the border crossing for a long time. Finally, when the Ellund motorway crossing was established in 1978, the path disappeared, but the old border crossing was never officially abolished. The two tollgates are still fixed in their original places. And the barriers are still closed!
