17 years in captivity at Sønderborg Castle; that was the price Christian II. had to pay for his comeback plans. He was the King of Denmark until 1523, when the nobility took him down and chose to enthrone his uncle, Duke Frederick, as king. Christian II fled abroad but made plans for his comeback for several years. Instead of regaining power though, as soon as he returned from exile, he was imprisoned. There are plenty of anecdotes about the famous prisoner. Among the best known is the story of the round marble table in the tower, where he was held. As Christian II. constantly walked around the table in frustration, he kept a finger on the tabletop. In the course of time, his finger carved a deep, concentric groove into the marble. An imaginative story, but is it true? At least a sculpture of the round table with the groove in it is installed down by the harbor quay.
