Trøjborg Castle Ruins
According to legend, during demolition work on the moat, the bridge over the ditch collapsed, so that the workers could no longer get over. What remained of Trøjborg Castle, built in the 1300s, was a ruin. Enchanted and surrounded by tall trees, it is situated outside of Visby, near Tønder. The most prominent owner of Trøjborg was Queen Margrete I. Around 1580, Peter Rantzau demolished the original medieval castle to erect a Renaissance castle on the site instead. Again, the castle was rebuilt in Baroque style in 1740. Landowner Knud Lausten Knudsen bought the building in1851. His aim was to train teachers there, but the government refused. Finally, the castle was demolished in 1854 - and today the ruin is a tourist attraction.
