The Bergmühle presents the Pakistani feature film "Joyland" (2022) by Saim Sadiq
Haider, a daydreamer, is the youngest son of a conservative Pakistani extended family. While his ambitious wife Mumtaz earns money as a cosmetologist, he takes care of his nieces and looks after his father – but without income and without children, Haider does not meet his family’s expectations at all. When he unexpectedly lands a job one day, Haider's life changes dramatically: He secretly performs as a background dancer at night in the show of the charismatic transgender dancer Biba. From initial fascination, deeper feelings quickly develop, and Haider finds himself in a moral dilemma – his family eagerly expects a grandchild from him while he dreams of his freedom…
With JOYLAND, director Saim Sadiq makes his feature film debut and tells a multi-layered, explosive love story about tradition, family, and personal freedom. "It is the de-romanticization of a coming-of-age story and a tribute to all women, men, and transgender people suffering under patriarchy. Moreover, the film celebrates the longing that creates incredible connectedness and eternal love. Ultimately, it is a heartbreaking love letter to my homeland." (Saim Sadiq)
The film is in German and has a duration of 126 minutes.
Admission is free. The hat is going around.
