The heyday of North German organ music in the 17th century produced diverse forms and sound effects. Echo technique, virtuosic joy of playing, contrapuntal art, and sonic richness characterize this music. Also characteristic is the Stylus phantasticus with its free form, improvisational gestures, and the impactful contrasts between virtuosic and fugal sections.

The opening is a large-scale prelude with three differently structured fugues. The prelude already draws on the notes of the C major triad; from them, the thematic material of the fugues also develops. Thus, despite the changing forms, a close musical connection arises.
