Charleys Tante -Plattdeutscher Schwank
Low German Farce
The students Jakob and Charley are deeply in love. However, for their long-awaited meeting with their beloved, Anne and Kathrin, they need the support of Charley's wealthy aunt from South America as a "chaperone." Unfortunately, Donna Lucia's arrival is delayed, and so gardener Bruns has to take on this role and disguise himself as a woman. He quickly takes a liking to his portrayal of an older lady, and when he is courted by Captain Franke, Jakob's father, chaos ensues. An almost absurd chain of misunderstandings, excuses, and further white lies begins – until Charley's real aunt also appears, threatening to expose the whole deception.
The farce by British author Brandon Thomas from 1892 is now a classic of comedic misunderstandings. In addition to film adaptations featuring stars like Heinz Rühmann and Peter Alexander, the popular play has been translated into over 25 languages, adapted into operettas, staged as a musical, and continues to impress with its unbeatable rapid situational comedy.
