Charleys Tante -Plattdeutscher Schwank

Other art & culture

Students Jakob and Charley are deeply in love. However, for their long-awaited meeting with their crushes, Anne and Kathrin, they need the support of Charley's rich aunt from South America as a "chaperone." Unfortunately, Donna Lucia's arrival is delayed, so the gardener Bruns must quickly take on this role and disguise himself as a woman. He quickly takes a liking to his portrayal of an older lady, and when he is wooed by Captain Franke, Jakob's father, chaos ensues. A nearly absurd chain of misunderstandings, excuses, and further lies begins – until Charley's real aunt also appears, threatening to expose the whole deception.

The farce by British author Brandon Thomas from 1892 has long become a classic of mistaken identity comedies. In addition to film adaptations featuring stars like Heinz Rühmann and Peter Alexander, the popular play has been translated into over 25 languages, adapted into operettas, brought to the stage as a musical, and continues to impress with its unbeatable fast-paced situational comedy.
