Art in the castle
Brundlund Castle in Aabenraa is a small castle from the 1400s. The castle was originally built to house the city administration and a dungeon. Today, it is owned by the Museum Sønderjylland and dedicated to South Jutlandian art from the late 1700s to the present. The many tower rooms form a special framework for the exhibition. Brundlund Castle features a large collection of the works of South Jutlandian artists. The most famous ones being the avant-garde artist Franciska Clausen and the Golden Age painter C.W. Eckersberg. The collection of Franciska Clausen's works alone contains approx. 2,500 units. In all, the museum consists of an art exhibition inside the castle, a museum shop, and a café. The park is adorned by 24 sculptures and artistically cut hedges. Also, in the park you will find a picture school for children, and - by the parking lot - a millhouse with a functioning water mill.
