The Danewerk (in Danish: Danevirke) is Northern Europe’s largest fortification. Following the 30 kilometres long rampart you can hike through history and enjoy landscape views. For instance, an approximately 13 kilometres long circular route with start and finish in the village of Dannewerk leads you along the Waldemarsmauer (Waldemar’s Wall). The famous Danish King Waldemar (in Danish: Valdemar) reinforced the rampart, which was initially built in the Iron Age, and had been repeatedly rebuilt and expanded; here, at this point, he built a brick wall. This actually made him a brick pioneer, since the approximately 850-year-old wall is one of the oldest constructions of its kind in Northern Europe. Other stops include the Danewerk Museum and Haithabu Viking village. Without the Danewerk, the Viking settlement would not have been conceivable. It offered protection from raids by Slavs, East Franconia and Scandinavian Vikings.
