Night Duty on the Border

On a warm summer night, when the border was still monitored on foot, a customs officer went on patrol with his service dog. He took up a post on a bench near a border hut. The night was very quiet, so the customs officer soon dozed off. His old dog did the same.
That very night, the customs officer's superior wanted to check that his employee was doing his job properly. He parked far away and walked quietly to the border hut.
There he found the customs officer and his dog asleep. Anxious to see how long the nap would last, he carefully sat down next to them. Soon he too fell asleep.
When the dog handler woke up, he noticed his superior. He did not wake him up but slipped away with his dog. When the superior finally woke up, there was no sign of the publican and his dog. In subsequent official encounters, they only grinned knowingly, and the official nap remained unpunished.
