The fairy tale poet at the castle
Do you know about Hans Christian Andersen? He is Denmark's most famous fairy tale author. Among others, he wrote the fairy tales "The Ugly Duckling", "The Tinderbox" and "The Little Mermaid".
Hans Christian Andersen travelled extensively, and on his travels, he lived in castles and manor houses. He dined with queens and dukes and in the evenings entertained them by reading aloud from his stories or making paper cuts. At Gråsten Castle one finds a sculpture of a little girl. The sculpture is inspired by a sad fairy tale that Hans Christian Andersen wrote in the garden of the castle in 1845. The fairy tale is called "The Little Match Girl" and alas it doesn't have a happy ending. It's about a little girl who sits outside in the cold on New Year's Eve and looks in through the windows on those who have both food and warmth. Maybe you would like to read it?
