The border in Vilmkær/Wilmkjer town takes a strange course: a small corner of Denmark juts into Germany here. When the border was established in 1920, this course came about at the personal request of the people in Vilmkær, who wanted to stay Danish citizens.
Unfortunately, however, the road in front of one of the farms (see picture) was given to Germany. Having the customs border right on your doorstep posed a problem, to say the least. If, for example, you harvested grain or vegetables from your fields in Germany, you were not allowed to bring them into Denmark. As a result, a barn was built on the German side in 1927. The harvesters working in Germany also had to eat their food here, because they were not allowed to cross the border into the house. At times, even the horses that were installed in the Danish barn, were not allowed to work in the German fields.
Unfortunately, visitors to the farm were often subjected to extremely strict controls, because the secluded Vilmkær - due to the lack of a barrier - was a popular smuggling route.
