Where beasts of burden used to haul...
Up to 50,000 cattle and a distance of several hundred kilometres: Depending on the weather, the dusty
or muddy route from Viborg to the big markets in Lübeck, Hamburg and Wedel was certainly no walk
in the park for the Danish drovers. Today, the historic route of the Oxen Trail is well developed for
hikers and cycle tourists to enjoy. While the German part of the road is called "Ochsenweg" (Oxen
Trail), the Danish section is named "Hærvej" (Army Road). Along the route, which leads through
scenic and varied landscapes of the border region, you will find several hostels and inns. And don’t
miss out on the numerous informational stops on the Danish-German history trail. One of the
highlights of the route is the Danewerk. This medieval rampart was declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 2018.
