Glücksburg Castle – Renaissance Water Castle on the Flensburg Fjord

Glücksburg Castle near Flensburg is one of the most significant Renaissance castles in Northern Germany. The impressive water castle on the Flensburg Fjord is located on an island and is completely surrounded by water as well as an extensive park.

The castle was built between 1582 and 1587 under Duke Johann the Younger. The nearly unchanged Renaissance architecture makes it an important testament to Northern German building art. The history of the castle is particularly closely linked to the Danish royal family and numerous European noble families. Even today, many European monarchs are descended from Christian IX, who has his roots in Glücksburg Castle.

Inside, visitors can expect historical rooms, exhibitions, and original furnishings that provide insight into the life of the ducal family. Artworks and exhibits narrate the tumultuous history of the House of Glücksburg. The complex also includes the historic chapel with the ducal crypt.

The castle regularly offers guided tours, themed tours, events, and programs for families and children. With an audio guide, the over 400-year history can be discovered individually and flexibly.
