Together, the Christiansenpark, the Museumsberg and the Old Cemetery in Flensburg represent an impressive garden and cemetery unit that has its origins in the Age of Enlightenment around 1800. At that time, many people broke away from burying the deceased solely in enclosed churchyards. They also wanted to give them a resting place in nature. This was the reason behind the Old Cemetery. Some, like the merchant Peter Clausen Stuhr, even desired a grave in their own garden. Since his garden was outside the city limits at that time, he got permission to have a family grave built in today's Christiansenpark. By the way, he also had a mummy grotto built here, which you can examine during your walk.
