One Region - many Languages
In our border region you will meet place name signs written in German/Frisian, as well as German/Danish. Every year the award "Plattdüütsch-Emmi", a price for special efforts to promote Low German, is being consigned. You can join guided city tours given in a very special and exclusive dialect, called Petuh, and in addition to Standard Danish, you can also encounter Sønderjysk (Southern Jutlandic), a Danish dialect with a German touch. We distinguish between the regional languages: Low German/Plattdeutsch and Sønderjysk/Southern Jutlandic, and the minority languages: Frisian, German and Danish. If you mix them all (exempt Frisian) the outcome is Petuh, a unique Flensburg vernacular.
By the way: Romani, a language spoken by Sinti and Roma, is a recognised minority language in Schleswig-Holstein. And, in case you wonder: yes, we all do know how to speak High German.
