The Flensburg Fishing Association - upholding tradition

Tourguide
Coastal fishing has a long tradition in Flensburg. And the fishing association Flensburger Fischerverein, founded in 1872, is one of the oldest associations in the city. In its heyday around 1900, fishing was the livelihood of 150 families, whereas today nearly all of them are part-time fishers. They uphold tradition and have turned an old fisherman's hut into a small museum where historical fishing equipment such as eel picks, anchor lights and net needles are being displayed. Even an old Wadenboot (dragnet-boat) is displayed here - a fishing boat, typical of this region, which looks reminiscent of a Viking ship. Some of these devices are still in use today, and walkers can watch the members of the association process fish, mend nets and keep their boats in good condition - almost as they did in 1872.
