Holy Spirit Church Flensburg – Danish Church with Medieval History

The Holy Spirit Church (Helligåndskirken) in Flensburg is one of the oldest churches in the city and a special testament to German-Danish history. The two-aisled brick church was built in 1386 as the church of the Hospital of the Holy Spirit and has been used for services of the Danish community since 1588.

Particularly worth seeing are the medieval frescoes from the 14th century, which were rediscovered during a restoration. The elaborately designed Baroque altar and historical ship models are also part of the remarkable furnishings of the church.

Today, the Holy Spirit Church is the main church of the Danish communities in South Schleswig. Services are held in both German and Danish languages. Since 1997, the church has been owned by the Danish Church in South Schleswig and also stands for the close connection and peaceful coexistence of German and Danish culture in Flensburg.

Modern art also has its place in the historical church: In 2013, the artwork "Pinseporten" (Pentecost Gate) by the Danish artist Bjørn Nørgaard was installed with stained glass windows and a bronze sculpture.
