North Gate Flensburg – Landmark and Historic City Gate

The North Gate in Flensburg is one of the most famous landmarks of the harbor city and the oldest preserved city gate of Flensburg. The current gate was built between 1594 and 1596 and formed the northern boundary of the city until the end of the 18th century.

The striking stepped gable made of brick makes the North Gate a special example of northern German Renaissance architecture. Above the archway, coat-of-arms panels remind of Flensburg's close connection to Denmark. The inscription "Peace nourishes – Discord consumes" refers to the turbulent history of the border city.

Today, the North Gate stands at the northern end of Norderstraße and marks the transition to the historic Flensburg Old Town. From here, the city center with its merchant courtyards, historical buildings, small shops, and cafés can be explored on foot.

Directly at the North Gate is also the PHÄNOMENTA Flensburg, allowing both attractions to be perfectly linked with each other.
