Marienstraße with Rumhaus Johannsen – Experience Flensburg's Rum History

The Marienstraße in Flensburg runs through a particularly historic part of the old town and is closely linked to the traditional rum history of the harbor city. A highlight is the Rumhaus Johannsen in the historic “Marienburg” at Marienstraße 6–8. The family business has been producing traditional Flensburg rum specialties here since 1878.

The Marienburg, a merchant's courtyard over 300 years old, today houses the headquarters and the manufactory of Johannsen. In the historic front building, visitors can discover and taste rum, liqueurs, and other specialties at Johannsen's Hökerei.

Thus, the Marienstraße is an important site of Flensburg's rum tradition. In the 18th century, Flensburg played a significant role in trade with the Caribbean. Sugar and rum arrived in the city through Flensburg's trade routes, permanently shaping its economy and city history.

The Rumhaus Johannsen is today the last traditionally producing rum house in Flensburg. Tours and tastings provide the opportunity to learn more about the production, history, and significance of Flensburg rum.
