Today, Ireland is renown for producing delicious butter. In the old days, the region of Angeln in North Germany was famous for this supreme dairy product. In the area between the Flensburg Fjord and the Schlei Firth, peasants used to breed a cattle, called "Angler Rind" - a breed that now is threatened with extinction. The Angler Rind cows provide a particularly rich milk that was very well suited for butter production. The quality butter from Angeln was even sold by mail order in the 1930s. Customers from cities as far away as Berlin, Dresden and Cologne purchased the reputated delicacy. Farm owner Las Christesen was one of the first to run his rotary butter churn by water power. A reconstruction of this ancient butter mill can be seen at Landschaftsmuseum Angeln in Unewatt.
