Neptune Fountain Flensburg – Rococo Art at Nordermarkt

The Neptune Fountain in Flensburg is centrally located at the historic Nordermarkt and is one of the prominent attractions of the Flensburg Old Town. The ornate fountain was created in 1758 in the Rococo style and remains a defining element of the historic marketplace to this day.

At the center of the fountain stands the figure of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. The richly decorated fountain column is crowned by the Neptune figure. The fountain basin features Rocaille ornaments, the Danish coat of arms, and the mirror monogram of Danish King Frederick V – visible testimonies of Flensburg's historical connection to the Danish kingdom.

The Neptune Fountain is closely linked to the history of the Nordermarkt. Prior to this, there was a market fountain in this location. With the redesign in 1758, Flensburg's first representative decorative fountain was created. Today, the fountain is regarded as one of the characteristic historical monuments of the city center.

A special tradition is the “Neptune Baptism” of the students of Duborg-Skolen after passing their Abitur. Since the 1980s, this custom has become part of Flensburg's city life.

Due to its central location, the Neptune Fountain at Nordermarkt can be ideally combined with a walk through the Flensburg Old Town. Directly adjacent are St. Mary's Church, the historic Schrangen, as well as Große Straße and Norderstraße.
