Baltic Sea fishing in the border area between Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein has a long-standing tradition. In their small rowing-boats, the fishermen caught mainly herring and cod inshore with their hand-knotted nets. So-called Fischfrauen (fish women) would sell the catch on the market.
In its heyday around 1900, full-time fishing played a key role in supplying and feeding the population in many Baltic Sea ports. Thanks to railways and innovative cooling options, fish could increasingly also be transported inland.
Gradually, larger and larger fishing trawlers with modern fishing gear and refrigeration systems were being used at sea. Today, at the push of a button, the goods are sold on a fish exchange market even directly from on board. On the flip side, rising costs and catch-restrictions threaten the livelihoods of many fishers. Only a few can make fishing a profitable business today.
