St. Jürgen-Kirche
St. Jürgen Church Flensburg – above the Fjord
The St. Jürgen Church in Flensburg is a distinctive building in the Jürgensby district and shapes the cityscape with its tall bell tower on the eastern fjord slope. The neo-Gothic brick building was constructed from 1904 to 1907 according to the plans of architect Oskar Hoßfeld.
The church stands on historic ground: there was already a settlement with a hospital for the sick in the Middle Ages. The name St. Jürgen goes back to Saint George, who is referred to as "Jürgen" in Low German.
The interior of the church is also worth seeing. A late Gothic net vault spans the space, complemented by furnishings in the neo-Renaissance style. Particularly noteworthy are the Renaissance pulpit by Heinrich Ringerink and an altar painting by Hans Peter Feddersen. Two ship models remind of Flensburg's close connection to seafaring.
Due to its elevated location, St. Jürgen Church Flensburg is clearly visible and a defining landmark of the eastern urban area. It is considered an important cultural monument of the city.
